Rubbena Aurangzeb-Tariq
ChairRubbena Aurangzeb-Tariq is a British born deaf artist from a Muslim upbringing.
Her installations and paintings explore how we collect our feelings and thoughts within ourselves that are reflected through the cultural boundaries. The work created allows the artist to rebel against those boundaries through her art works.
In addition to her training in Fine Art at St Martin’s and Surrey, she is a qualified art psychotherapist and her fascination the subtle revelation of unconscious conflicts forms the core of her work, whether that tension is between cultures, people or parts of the self.
Her work has been exhibited in solo shows in London and Oxford and in group exhibitions in London, Montreal, Paris, Birmingham and elsewhere, with her work being featured on both the BBC and Channel 4.

Personal experience:
I was committee for the Deaf Staff Meeting attending twice a year at AoHL.I had managed a project called “Deaf Religion Theatre Performance”, which was held at Harrow in 1999. The aim of the performance was to raise money for deaf schools and organisations in India and also for the training of Asian interpreters. My main tasks were to oversee the organisation of the event, ranging from ticket design and print to the catering and health & safety. Deaf and hearing volunteers helped each others as well as myself to ensure that everything was in order. I carried out several presentations to all volunteers. Prior to the build up of the performance as well on the night to an audience of 200 including the local mayor, MPs, VIP guests and the deaf public. As an event organiser of the deaf theatre, this project tasks place over a period of a year.
I had organised for a group of 20 deaf Asians to attend the Navaratri Festival in 2000, and I had negotiated with the Navaratri Festival committee organisers to receive tickets for the group at a discounted price. The event took place in Northolt, West London.
I have been to National Black Deaf Advocates conference twice and National Deaf Asian Congress conference once based in USA. The aim was to encourage deaf people to go to the conference and have opportunity to meet deaf people from different culture, workshops, seminars, drama, tourists trip and social event. I had organised for 25 deaf people to go to Washington DC for NDAC conference.
From my personal experience as a deaf person, I give advocate to families and friends, as they have no deaf awareness and was not aware of their needs. I had to use my own time to give them correct information and where to go for their resources. I have noticed that they felt not quite confident because they do not know how to get advices and information because their families have not told them about it.
I have provided deaf people and their families and friends with information. I have encouraged them to become aware of where and how to get involved in the deaf community by attending Deaf clubs, events. etc. I have also encouraged families and friends of deaf people to become aware of deaf issues; e.g. Communication support, equipment, deaf culture. This will help them to understand the needs of deaf people and where to go for further support.
I have experience to work with deaf children in special occasion event or at family’s party so i can communicated with them because of my language and culture. Family and friends would understand how the deaf children behaviour and act that way. I have been involved in ethnic community in East London.
I am profoundly deaf myself and can communicate fluently in total communication and BSL. I have experience communicating deaf staff and deaf clients. I hold CACDP BSL Stage 1 and 2 qualifications. Also I have ASL Level 1 and 2 certificates as well.
